How to Stay Safe Online: 5 Simple Steps

Welcome to the first official post on The Security Brief.

I’m excited to dive into the world of cybersecurity with you. Let’s break down some essential tips to help you stay safe online. Whether you’re new to the field or just looking to boost your knowledge, you’ve come to the right place!

Today, I’m sharing 5 easy to-follow-tips that anyone can use. Whether you’re a tech expert or just starting out, these tips will help keep your digital life secure.

1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords (And Don’t Reuse Them!)

One simple yet effective way to protect your accounts is by using strong passwords. Each password should be unique for every account. “Password123” or “qwerty” just won’t cut it!

What makes a strong password?

  • Length: Aim for at least 12 characters.
  • Complexity: Use a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
  • Uniqueness: Never reuse passwords across different sites. If one account is compromised, you don’t want all your other accounts at risk.

Pro Tip: Use a password manager!

Tools like LastPass1Password, or KeePass can help you store strong passwords. They generate unique passwords for all your accounts. You do not have to remember each one.

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

If you haven’t enabled Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) yet, you are missing out. It is one of the easiest ways to add an extra layer of security. 2FA requires you to provide two pieces of information when logging into your account. First, enter your password. Then, use a second factor, which is usually a code sent to your phone or email.

Why should you use 2FA?

  • It makes it much harder for hackers to access your accounts, even if they have your password.
  • Popular websites like Google, Facebook, Instagram and X offer 2FA – so don’t miss out!

Pro Tip: Ensure you choose an authenticator app like Google or Microsoft Authenticator. Avoid relying on SMS text messages. Authenticator apps are more secure.

3. Stay Up-to-Date with Software Updates

We all hate those ‘Software Update Available’ notifications, right? But trust me – updating your software is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself from cyber threats. Software updates often include security patches that fix vulnerabilities hackers could exploit. Ignoring them leaves your device open to attacks.

Pro Tip: Set your devices (where possible) to update automatically. That way, you’ll never forget to install critical updates again!

4. Be Wary of Phishing Scams

Phishing scams are one of the most common ways hackers gain access to your personal information. These scams often come in the form of emails, text messages, or social media messages. They pretend to be someone you trust – like a bank, retailer, or even a friend.

How can you spot a phishing attempt?

  • Look for suspicious email addresses or URLs (they might look similar to real websites but with small differences).
  • Check for spelling and grammar errors in the message.
  • Don’t click on suspicious links – hover over them first to see where they lead.
  • Be cautious if the message urges you to act quickly. Do not provide sensitive information like passwords, national insurance numbers, or credit card details.

Pro Tip: When in doubt, contact the organisation directly through a trusted method. Use their official website or customer service number. This will help verify if the message is legitimate.

5. Secure Your Wi-Fi Network

Your home Wi-Fi network is the gateway to your online activities. If it’s not secure, hackers can access your personal devices and data. Here’s how to protect it:

  • Change the default password: Your router comes with a default password. It’s important to change it to something more secure.
  • Use WPA3 encryption: This is the latest, most secure encryption method. Check your router settings and switch to WPA3 if possible.
  • Disable WPS: Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is feature that can make your network vulnerable. If your router has it enabled, turn it off.

Pro Tip: Create a guest network for visitors to use, so they don’t have access to your main network. This keeps your personal devices more secure.
